A Day on the Flats

If there is an epicenter of the waterfowling universe it’s likely located off Matagorda Island on the Gulf Coast of Texas. The annual North American waterfowl migration bottlenecks in eastern Texas, and there seems to be no limit to the number of species hunters may encounter during a single day in the blind. On my first day in the blind with legendary outdoor writers Joe Coogan and Bryce M Towsley, we encountered gadwall, pintail, redheads (by the thousands), shovelers, teal, mottled ducks and a variety of other species. In fact, we had redheads pitching into the decoys before daylight! After sunup, Joe, Bryce and I had the opportunity to put our Benelli and Franchi shotguns to the test, and Matagorda may be the ultimate test for a waterfowling gun. The saltwater spray, mud, and constant firing test the reliability and durability of duck guns, and both the Franchi Affinity and Benelli Super Vinci accounted for plenty of ducks despite the slop and salt. In addition, Federal Premium Ammunition provided us with their Black Cloud steel shot ammunition and Duck Commander gear. If you are a waterfowl hunter and rely on steel shot then you owe it to yourself to load up on Black Cloud. The Federal ammo performed well and provided consistent patterns. There were no cycling or feeding problems despite tough conditions, and shot after shot, bird after bird, the guns and ammo worked to perfection. I took my limit of redheads the first day and followed it up with a limit of pintails the second day, including a fabulous bull sprig (drake pintail, for those who aren’t familiar with waterfowling vernacular). Bay Flats Lodge played host to our crew, and the accomodations were outstanding. I look forward to returning year after year to hunt for ducks and fish the flats for big red drum and sea trout. If you are a duck hunter grab your Benelli, your waders, and a box of Black Cloud and contact Chris Martin at Bay Flats Lodge. I can promise you won’t be disappointed! A Beginner’s Guide to Concealed Carry

IMG_3726Each year, millions of Americans apply for their concealed carry permits, but a single course over 12 hours can’t possibly cover all of the details of shooting, cleaning, practice, firearms terminology and range etiquette. In May 2013, Skyhorse Publishing will release my latest book, The Shooter’s Bible Guide to Concealed Carry. This book takes a look at all of the basic aspects of carrying, shooting, cleaning, and storing your firearm. Written with the beginning shooter in mind, The Shooter’s Bible Guide to Concealed Carry teaches the novice shooter everything they need to know to become comfortable and safe with guns.
